Over the summer our local section sponsored several activities for Upward
Bound and HOIST students and teachers. HOIST stands for "Helping
Orient Indian Students and Teachers in Math and
Science"

On July 5, Dr. Nick Natale described "The periodic Table of the Moles" to a
HOIST class.

July 12, Jeff Leitch and Sharon LaMont of the UI SAACS
(above left) , Dr.Nick, and grad. students Chris Morris (above
right) and Jamie Weinstock (below) put on
a demo show for about eighty Upward bound and HOIST Students and
Teachers. After Jeff and Sharon demonstrated
exploding oxygen and hydrogen soap bubbles, the
group broke up into groups for four hands on activities. Chris
Morris demonstrated making nylon, Jamie Weinstock showed the chemistry
of fireworks, Dr. Nick and Feather demonstrated
plant rubbing and chromatography, and Jeff and
Sharon helped the students make slime.

While the cast prepared ice cream, Dr. Nick
described the up-coming "Mole of Art " contest for NCW
2001 (below).

On July 18, Dr. Nick made a class presentation & hands on demo on "The Taxol
Story" to Earnest Rufus's Upward Bound Math & Science class. Dr. Nick
told the story of northwest ethno-botany and
medicinal chemistry leading to a modern
pharmaceutical.
