Spring 2002 SpareWIBS Serving the WIBS community
Welcome back to the misnomer that is the spring semester. Due to the wonders of democracy we have had a peaceful transition of WIBS chairs to Dan Stelck from myself. I have agreed to spend my retirement from the chair position as the web master of WebWIBS. Please email me if you have any news to contribute.

This year's lucky winners for the annual Soak the Professor/TA benefit for the UI-ACS student affiliate section are Kevin Rider and Rick Fletcher.

Here we have the properly attired duo.....
..............with a coin-toss to decide their watery fate.

Prof. Rick Fletcher undergoing radical aqua-therapy. The flash apparently did not fire, hence the dark features. The aqua-therapist is Matt Pollard, who would make a fine patient for next year's treatment.

This is Kevin Rider with two rubber duckies. His labmate, Dave Burkhart is doing the honors.
We should all applaud our thoroughly hydrated companions for their service to the UI-ACS student affiliate section.

Nick Natale makes the following contribution:
National Chemistry Week, October 2001
The Washington Idaho Border Section cooperated with all three Student Affiliate ACS clubs for NCW. The central unifying event was a the grand opening of a display entitled "A periodic table of the Moles", which consisted of Native American Mole sculptures arranged in a periodic table by chemical composition. After a lecture describing the mole sculptures by NCW coordinator Nick Natale, a ribbon cutting ceremony was held, and a pizza party reception afterwards was attended by all three SA groups: Washington State University, Lewis-Clark State College, and the University of Idaho SAACS clubs. The Local Section cooperated with the UI SAACS for a table at the annual Tutxinmepu Pow-wow, attendance and particpation in the Coffee filter chromatography and stained glass glue experiments was much higher than last year (30-40), perhaps due to the help of new SA member Feather Broncheau, a member of the Nez Perce tribe. The WIBS local Section also hosted a lecture by noted archaeologist Keo Boreson on the Chemistry of Rock Art, the UI SAACS held a week long cookie sale, and performed a special Milli mole Chem Magic show on campus,a nd a NCW demo at the Moscow ID library. The LCSC SAACS held a campus demonstration show as well, the lecture And demo shows had audiences of about 50 each. The UI SAACS also helped send out several mailings of NCW activites booklets and ChemMatters to all of the science teachers in the local section.

advisor Dr. Roger Willett, LCSC , WSU and UI SAACS members, and NCW
Coordinator Nick Natale. Feather Broncheau (second from Left) is a UI SAACS
member, and a member of the Nez Perce tribe. The yellow section of the
periodic table, which is visible in the photo, has Native American mole
sculptures arranged by their chemical composition. Examples in the photo are
made of jet, which contains carbon, and purple fluorite which consists of
Calcium fluoride with a trace of yttrium.
